HSS Activity 1 - Development

1.       Development is the action of changing or improving something of the past. Different people will see development differently based on many different things. Development is about improving people’s living conditions. Improvement of different things including, technology, infrastructure, economy and health care.
2.       Human Development Index, life expectancy, infant mortality rate, acces to medical care.

3.       LEDS: This is an abbreviation that means, “Less Economically Developed Country” which refers to a country with a less developed economy than most countries.
MEDS: This is an abbreviation that means, “More Economically Developed Country” which refers to a country with a more developed economy than most countries. 
4.       By looking at the Human Development Index, you take many indicators into account and not just one.   
5.       5.1 Yes
5.2   Since the countries have a low Human Development Index, the countries probably don’t have good access to medical care as the country is probably not a wealthy country. The people in that country probably also can’t afford proper health care. Dont have clean water. Dont have money for food.
5.3    Lack of medical facilities, poor level of education, big populations
5.4   They are farmers that live off of the products that they farm. They are dependent on that which they farm.
5.5   They need capital to buy everything needed to farm including petrol and farming machines. They need enough water to irrigate their crops.
6.        Sustainable development is a pattern of growth in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come.
7.       7.1  Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
7.2 Achieve universal primary education
7.3 Promote gender equality and empower women
7.4 Reduce child mortality rates
7.5 Improve maternal health
7.6 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
7.7 Ensure environmental sustainability
7.8 Develop a global partnership for development
