Conclusion

St Alban's College has many green feature that are efficient. However, there are more non-green features than green features and this should be looked at and should be replaced with green features. These non-green features are very wasteful. They use unnecessary amounts of water and electricity. All in all, St Alban's College is aware of green features, but could do more in reducing the amount of non-green features that are present in the school.

Non green Features of St Alban's College

This window is a non-green feature due to its minuscule size. It only allows a small amount of light into the room and thus results in the need of electrical lighting. A way to counter this feature is to install a larger window.
This heater is a Non-Green Feature due to the fact that it does not conserve electricity use. A way to counter this feature is to intall energy-efficient heaters.
This toilet is a Non-Green Feature due to the fact that it uses an immense amount of water to function. A way to counter this is by installing Dual-Flush toilet systems
This gutter is a Non-Green Feature due tot the fact that it expels perfectly usefull rainwater to the sewage system. A way to counter this feature is to build a resevior for the water were it can later be used for irrigation.
This bell is an example of a Non-Green Feature due to the fact that it creates a excessive amount of noise pollution which can damage the hearing senses of humans and animals. A possible way to counter this feature is to install enegry efficient lights that indicate the end of a period.
This ventilation system( Aircon) is a Non-Green Feature due to the fact that it uses an immense amount of electricity. A way to counter this feature is to install a HVAC system that requires no electricity.

Green features of St Alban's College

This ventilation system is a green feature because it requires no electricity to ventilate hot air from a room.
This motion detecting light switch is a green feature because it only activates the lights when lights are needed. this saves a lot of electricity.
This building is a green building because it is made of a non-scarce wood, which means no pollutants(or very little) were made during the processing of its materials and no rare trees were destroyed for its materials.
This energy efficient heater is a green feature due to the fact that it optimizes electricity use which in turn helps the environment.

Activity 6 - Geography

1. Green buildings refers to a structure and using process that is environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle. Buildings materials must be environmentally friendly.

2. Green designs:

Dual flush toilets - Dual flush toilets have two settings that use different amounts of water.

Solar panels - Solar panels used on roofs generate electricity using sun light

Thick tiles in home - Thick tiles in home will store heat from underfloor heating for much longer, resulting in less time that underfloor heating needs to be on.

Green walls and roofs - Green walls and roofs absorb CO2 from the air resulting in less acid rain.

Skylight - Skylights provide light during the day that resutls in less electricity used for lights.

Light sencors

Light paint

Thatch roof - keeps cool and also keeps heat in

Pool cover - doesnt evaporate, dont need to use chemicals because bacteria need sunlight, traps heat

Big windows

Recycled water

Dry walling - doesnt use soil

North facing walls - have big windows on north facing and small windows on south facing

Double glasing windows

Non-green designs:

Electric water heat - solar

Blackout window that results in a lot of electricity use

Airconditioning

Florecent light

Floodlights / lights

Heaters

Small windows

Turn taps

1. It was a major United Nations conference held in Rio de Janeiro from 3 June to 14 June 1992. 2. 172 governments participated, with 108 sending their heads of state or government.[1] Some 2,400 representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) attended, with 17,000 people at the parallel NGO "Global Forum" (a.k.a. Forum Global), who had Consultative Status. 3. 14 June 1992 4. Rio de Janiero 5. Rio de Janiero and June 20-22 6. It is to address issues such as: • systematic scrutiny of patterns of production — particularly the production of toxic components, such as lead in gasoline, or poisonous waste including radioactive chemicals • alternative sources of energy to replace the use of fossil fuels which are linked to global climate change • new reliance on public transportation systems in order to reduce vehicle emissions, congestion in cities and the health problems caused by polluted air and smog • the growing scarcity of water 7. The Earth Summit resulted in the following documents: Rio Declaration on Environment and Development[2] Agenda 21[3][4] Forest Principles Moreover, two important legally binding agreements were opened for signature: Convention on Biological Diversity[5] Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). 8. It touches on issues that we cant ignore. It is important to have conferences like this to assure that we can preserve the earth for as long as possible. 9. Yes. Many positive decisions and ideas were thought up and these will benefit our earth positively. 10. They both aim at preserving our earth for as long as possible. 11. Activity 8

1.       It was the movement of African countries to gain their independance from the countries that colonised them and to promote the African traditions and ideals.

2.          Abboriginies Rights Protection Society - 1897

                African National Congress – 1912

National Congress of West Africa – 1920

3.       It is a movement for greater co-operation among Africans. People who support this movement are called Pan-Africanists. It also unifies Africans.

4.       Pan Africanism is more focused on getting people to co-operate in developing our country and forming a unity whereas African Nationalism is mainly focused on promoting the traditions, interests and ideals of Africa and gaining their independence.

5.           They have both fought for the independence from colonial rule and strongly supported the idea of Pan-Africanism, believing in a unity of Africans. Kwame Nkrumah was a Ghanaen leader that fought for independence from the British in his home country. Robert Sobukwe was the founder of the Pan-Africanist party.

6.        I feel that he wrote this song to communicate to Africans all over the world, that they should all return “home”. They must leave America and come back to the place where they are free and have independence – African Nationalism. They must come back home and create co-operation and unity among Africans – Pan Africanism. (Africans that have been forcefully removed from their countries and the longing to be Africans and to go home again)

HSS Film Review

In my opinion, this rural development project was successful. By teaching the people how to make the bricks and showing them how to build houses for themselves, the people gain a sense of pride and responsibility. Because they have to make all the bricks and build their houses, these people will undoubtedly take good care of the houses, as they had to do all the work and know how difficult it is to build the houses.
Another good thing about this project is that the material needed to make the bricks is simply mud found in the area, which means that they can build as many houses as they like and also, it does not cost money.  Because the mud will never run out, this is a truly sustainable project.
By giving these people the machines or tools required to make the bricks and the knowledge to do the job, this community can manufacture as many bricks as they need, and even sell the rest to enterprises. This leads to job creation, as more people become involved in making and selling bricks.  The project therefore enables the local people to have a source of income.
This project will start a new form of outreach by teaching the people in the community valuable skills and giving them the resources needed and telling them that they are responsible for the development of the area.
If the government implements more projects like this, they won’t have to spend as much money on RDP houses.  Fewer people will have to sleep outside in the cold, which could eventually be the end of squatter camps.
Unemployment is usually highest in rural areas. Through this project, the poorest of the poor find employment.
Very often, aid organisations simply dump provisions in poor communities and leave. In this case, the aid givers stay to teach and monitor. This demonstrates the truth of the saying: Give a man a fish, and he’ll have food for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll have food for life.

MEDS: This is an abbreviation that means, “More Economically Developed Country” which refers to a country with a more developed economy than most countries.
4.       By looking at the Human Development Index, you take many indicators into account and not just one.
5.       5.1 Yes
5.2   Since the countries have a low Human Development Index, the countries probably don’t have good access to medical care as the country is probably not a wealthy country. The people in that country probably also can’t afford proper health care. Dont have clean water. Dont have money for food.
5.3    Lack of medical facilities, poor level of education, big populations
5.4   They are farmers that live off of the products that they farm. They are dependent on that which they farm.
5.5   They need capital to buy everything needed to farm including petrol and farming machines. They need enough water to irrigate their crops.
6.        Sustainable development is a pattern of growth in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come.
7.       7.1  Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
7.2 Achieve universal primary education
